PIANO SLAM invites M-DCPS middle and high school students to write poetry about the music in their lives.

Be inspired by this year’s selected 2 piano compositions by Robert Xavier Rodriguez.
Rodriguez has served as composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony, and the San Antonio Symphony, among others. He currently holds the endowed chair of university professor of music at The University of Texas at Dallas.

Piano Slam
Glossary of Terms

Poetry content can be selected from within the areas of general language, STEAM, or social studies.


All poetry must include musical references and connect to this year’s theme, “Music of my past … Sounds of the future.”
See glossary of terms to your right as resources to use while writing poetry for submission to the Piano Slam competition.
Winners will receive $100 and will perform their poetry on stage, with the chance to win $1,000.
